Coronavirus in UAE: Impact on mosque goers
DUBAI – Muslims in the UAE have been told not to attend prayers in mosques if they are unwell or suffering from serious colds or illnesses as part of precautionary measures to avoid the spread of the new coronavirus or Covid-19. The Fatwa Council on March 4 said that anyone at risk of potentially contracting coronavirus should pray at home instead. High-risk individuals include senior citizens and people with weak immune systems. The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments also announced that mosques and Quran centres across the country will be sterilized as part of efforts to safeguard public health. Religious authorities in the country have issued precautionary measures as Covid-19 continued to spread globally, with the number of infections in the UAE rising to 45 over the weekend. Catholic churches in the country were recently ordered to follow an eight-step plan to curb the spread of the virus, including removing holy water from fonts and changing the distribution of holy communion.
