Coronavirus in UAE: Mosque prayers, church Mass suspended

DUBAI – Public prayers in mosques, churches and temples in the UAE will remain suspended for four weeks to curb the spread of the new coronavirus or Covid-19. The decision was based on directives issued by the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority and Ministry of Health and Prevention. Mosques will remain closed, but only the Azan or call for prayer will be given out at mosques to alert worshippers about prayer times. Monday’s new directive follows calls from the Fatwa Council on March 4 for anyone at risk of potentially contracting coronavirus to pray at home instead. The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments also announced that mosques and Quran centres across the country will be sterilized as part of efforts to safeguard public health. Meanwhile, Catholic churches in the country were given an 8-point plan that will remain in force until April 2. The plan includes the removal of holy water from fonts, cancellation of religious gathering and events, and a change in how ministers distribute Holy Communion. http://www.expatmedia.net/coronavirus-uae-impact-mosque-goers/2020/03/ http://www.expatmedia.net/coronavirus-uae-new-rule-churches-affects-communion-holy-water/2020/03/
