Covid-19: 14 new Coronavirus cases in UAE

DUBAI – The Ministry of Health and Prevention announced on Monday (March 9) 14 new cases of the new coronavirus or Covid-19, bringing the total number of infected to 59. The newly infected include four Emiratis, three Italians, two Bangladeshis, two Nepalese, one Indian, one Syrian and one person from Russia. The ministry said the patients are “stable and undergoing treatment”. Around the world, the number of people infected by coronavirus surpassed 109,000 on Monday, with at least 3,800 deaths reported.

Meanwhile, the UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention also announced on Monday the recovery of five Covid-19 patients: Two Emiratis, two Ethiopians and one Thai. There are now a total of 12 patients in the UAE who have recovered from the new coronavirus.

Dubai airport passenger screening

The announcement follows preventive measures taken at Dubai Airports to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Extra health screenings are now in place at Dubai International Airport in efforts to curb the spread of the virus. Arriving passengers are required to go through health checks that include a screening and swabbing process.

New rule for UAE churches

Meanwhile, Catholic churches in the UAE have been ordered to remove holy water from fonts or vessels placed near the entrance, among other precautionary steps against Covid-19. In an 8-point order, Bishop Paul Hinder, the pope’s senior representative in the Arabian Peninsula, issued a letter telling church members that precautions would “limit the risks” of spreading the virus.

Mosques, quran centres to be sterilized

Muslims in the UAE have been told not to attend prayers in mosques if they are unwell or suffering from serious colds or illnesses as part of precautionary measures to avoid the spread of the new coronavirus. The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments also announced that mosques and Quran centres across the country will be sterilized as part of efforts to safeguard public health.

Schools closed

Schools, universities and nurseries across the UAE have also been ordered to close, with officials saying that during the shutdown, the premises will be sterilized. ICA/Expat Media
