Dubai to issue free driving permits for e-scooter riders soon
DUBAI β Driving permits for e-scooter riders in Dubai will be issued for free soon, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Sunday (April 10). The announcement follows a recent resolution by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, regulating the use of scooters in Dubai and requiring riders to get a driving permit. "By the end of this month, RTA will launch through its website (www.rta.ae) a link enabling interested individuals to apply for free to obtain permits for riding e-scooters on safe roads identified by RTA,β said Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA. Al Tayer said that e-scooter driving permit applicants will undergo training and past a test. βThe process involves attending training courses and passing an online test," Al Tayer explained. On Sunday, the RTA also announced that e-scooters will be allowed in 10 districts in Dubai starting on April 13. The initial phase covers Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Jumeirah Lakes Towers, Dubai Internet City, Al Rigga, 2nd of December Street, The Palm Jumeirah, and City Walk. It also covers safe roads and tracks within specific zones at Al Qusais, Al Mankhool, and Al Karama, in addition to the 167-km long tracks designated for bicycles and scooters across Dubai. In a previous interview, an RTA representative told Expatmedia.net that pending an announcement on the procedure for getting a driving license, cyclists and e-scooter riders may drive their vehicles in designated areas, provided they follow traffic rules and regulations set by Dubai Police.
