Filipino, Chinese two new cases of coronavirus in UAE

DUBAI – A Filipino and a Chinese national were confirmed as the latest cases of coronavirus in the UAE, bringing the total number of infected people to seven, according to a statement by the Ministry of Health and Prevention on Saturday (February 8). The Ministry did not reveal further details about the new cases but said  they are "under observation and necessary medical care according to the highest health standards applicable in the country.” It is not clear whether the two new cases contracted the new coronavirus overseas or in the UAE. The virus reportedly has a 14-day incubation period. "The patients were identified through the continuous periodic screening being conducted in accordance with the standards of the World Health Organisation for people with symptoms of the new coronavirus," the Ministry said. In the UAE, the first five people identified to have coronavirus are Chinese tourists from Wuhan. Globally, more than 34,000 people have been infected and 722 who died from coronavirus as of Thursday (February 6). Also on Thursday, Philippine Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said that a female household worker who recently died in Dubai tested positive for coronavirus. Bello told Inquirer.net that the initial report showed the Filipina tested negative for the virus, but a second test confirmed she had coronavirus. UAE authorities have yet to comment on the issue. Meanwhile, authorities in the UAE said that an electronic reporting system is effective and in place to quickly detect suspected cases. "All health facilities will continue to report any new cases suspected to have coronavirus," the Ministry said. On Thursday, authorities announced that they are using the Warred system, or an electronic database to help doctors detect potential cases of coronavirus during medical checkups. An algorithm scans the patient’s medical record to determine whether they could be at risk of coronavirus. “The Ministry also works in coordination with all sectors of the country to take all precautionary and preventive measures to ensure the safety and security of citizens and residents in the country.” ICA/Expat Media
