Available: UAE 'Know Your Rights' guide for workers

Workers in the private sector can now download the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE)’s handbook about their labor rights. The handbook is available in Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Hindu, and Urdu and can be downloaded from the MOHRE website. The guide explains the important rules in line with UAE laws that foreign workers need to follow including the employment process such as the conditions for charging employees regarding recruitment costs, the travel costs across the Emirates, and the process for starting and terminating an employment contract. Private-sector workers should keep these important points in mind:
  • The employer is prohibited from charging recruitment and employment fees on the worker or claiming them directly or indirectly.
  • The worker must sign their employment contract after arriving in the UAE.
  • The worker must keep a copy of their signed job offer.
  • The employment contract’s terms and conditions must have the exact conditions in the job offer the worker signed in their country.
  • The worker must contact the MOHRE immediately if the employer did not provide the agreed-upon job opportunity or did not pay their full wages on time.
  • The worker must be responsible for keeping their identification documents in a safe place.
  • The worker may leave employment at any time but must be fully aware of the legal obligations.
Popular questions such as the requirements of a worker before being employed and coming to the UAE are also addressed in the handbook. Once the worker arrives in the Emirates, the employer is obliged to comply with the proper process including providing the “employment contract” that the worker must sign upon arrival, being responsible for the completion of residence visa procedures not chargeable to the worker, acquiring the worker’s supporting documents to obtain the residence permit, and returning the worker’s identification documents after the issue of the residency visa. MOHRE advises any worker to contact their hotline number, 80060, if the employer fails to adhere to any of the guide rules. The ministry released a platform for appropriate labor accommodation for the workers via their website in January. KSO/Expat Media
