Non-OFWs returning to Philippines to pay cost of quarantine

  MANILA – Filipinos returning to the Philippines will need to pay for their accommodation at a government quarantine facility if they are not Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), the government said on Monday (May 11). The new directives announced by Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque applies to overseas Filipinos and repatriated Filipinos on tourist or visit visas in the UAE and other countries. Repatriation efforts are underway to bring home Filipinos stranded abroad after the coronavirus pandemic forced countries to close their airports and borders. Roque said the cost for coronavirus testing will be borne by state healthcare provider PhilHealth. As part of precautions against the spread of coronavirus, all passengers arriving in the Philippines are required to undergo a Covid-19 test and will be placed under quarantine at a government facility for up to five days while waiting for the test results. Those who test positive will be taken to hospitals, while those who test negative may return home with the assistance of the Department of Transport or local government units. OFWs will be taken to the We Heal As One Center-World Trade Center to complete their 14-day mandatory quarantine. In April, officials said that OFWs arriving in the Philippines will undergo a “redundancy check” to ensure they have undergone medical inspections at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said the bureau’s personnel will assist in identifying OFWs to be subjected to mass rapid testing and mandatory 14-day quarantine. Morente said the new directive came after reports that some passengers have not declared that they are OFWs to avoid being quarantined. “If they misdeclare their status during the health screening, immigration officers will still be able to detect it,” he said.
