Report OFWs with suspected coronavirus, Philippines says in advisory

DUBAI – As the new coronavirus continued to spread, the Philippine Department of Labour and Employment (DOLE) on Wednesday (January 29) issued an advisory urging Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to be vigilant and to report OFWs with symptoms of the virus. DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello said the Philippine authority said it is working with the Philippine Overseas Labour Office (POLO) in “closely monitoring” all cases linked to the viral infections in the Chinese city of Wuhan, considered the epicenter of the virus. There have been no confirmed cases of the new deadly strain of coronavirus in the Philippines, but 27 suspected cases are being monitored, according to the Health Department. The Philippines also announced on Tuesday that it will temporarily suspend issuing visas upon arrival for Chinese nationals amid concerns of a coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, DOLE urged OFWs to “immediately report suspected cases of OFWs with symptoms” to hospital and POLO offices for possible assistance. DOLE also urged OFWs to monitor all advisories issued by their host governments.

Advice from WHO

The authority also reminded all OFWS to follow the advice from the World Health Organization on precautions to avoid contracting the novel coronavirus: Avoid close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections Frequent hand washing or use alcohol-based hand rub, especially after direct contact with ill people, their environment and before touching the eyes, nose and mouth Avoid close contact with live or dead farm or wild animals Travelers with symptoms of acute respiratory infection should practice cough etiquette (maintain distance, cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing, and wash hands) Avoid visiting crowded places and hospitals; wear a mask if necessary If developing symptoms such as fever or respiratory symptoms, put on a mask and consult a doctor immediately. Let the doctor know if you have travelled to affected areas before disease onset Suspend work and stay at home for rest if recommended by doctors
