Sharjah minimum taxi fare now Dh17.50, meter rate to change every month

Starting on July 1, the minimum taxi fare in Sharjah increased to Dh17.50 as authorities announced that the taxi meter rate will change every month based on the current prices of fuel. Previously, the minimum taxi fare in Sharjah was Dh13.50 for trips between 8am and 10pm. The flag down fare in Sharjah also changed to Dh7 for trips between 8am and 10pm as of July 1. For trips during 10pm and 6am, the flag down fare will be Dh9, with the minimum fare set at Dh19.50. The taxi meter tariff has also been increased to Dh4 instead of Dh3 for trips between 8am and 10pm, and it is Dh5 for trips between 10pm and 6am. According to the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA), the taxi meter tariff will increase or decrease every month, based on fuel prices announced by the UAE Fuel Price Committee each month. SRTA Chairman Yousef Khamis Al Othmani said that the transport authority will set a tariff pricing policy based on the liberalized fuel price. Longtime Sharjah resident Maria (full name withheld) told Expatmedia.net that she was shocked to be charged Dh17.50 as minimum fare when she boarded a taxi to take her home after shopping for groceries. “It really hurts my pocket. I will be avoiding taxi trips whenever I can and just be mindful when buying groceries so I can comfortable carry all the bags,” Maria said. In Dubai, transport provider Uber also increased fares as of July 1, informing customers in an email that it would charge as much as 11 percent more for some trips. Across the UAE, fuel prices increased by nearly 50 fils for July as global crude oil prices continued to increase amid the Russia-Ukraine war.
