Survey: 49% of UAE residents believe Sinopharm effective vs new Covid strain

  DUBAI – In a new survey, 49 percent of UAE residents said they believe the Sinopharm vaccine is effective against the new strain of Covid-19. The survey, conducted in January by YouGov, is the first of its kind commissioned by G42 Healthcare, the Abu Dhabi-based company that worked with the Department of Health Abu Dhabi to roll out clinical trials of Sinopharm last year. ALSO READ: Experts explain why Sinopharm vaccine better against Covid-19 variants More than 1,000 people participated in the survey, with 37 percent of respondents saying there is independent data to prove the vaccine’s effectiveness. Among respondents who have been vaccinated, four out of five or 79 percent have opted to take the Sinopharm vaccine. Majority of respondents said they consulted health authority websites before taking the decision to get vaccinated, while 41 percent said they consulted family. The UAE-approved Sinopharm uses an inactivated version of the coronavirus, which means the vaccine was made using a dead version of the virus. Experts have said the Chinese-made Sinopharm vaccine may be more effective against Covid-19 variants because it uses a dead version of the virus to help the immune system fight off any variant of the virus. Luke O’Neill, a biochemistry professor at Trinity College Dublin, told media this makes inactivated vaccines better in protecting against virus mutations since it trains the body to fight all parts of the virus and not just its spike. Vaccines like Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, Oxford-AstraZeneca and Russia’s Sputnik V use mRNA, a molecule that instructs the body to create a spike protein that sets off an immune response.
