Third Covid-19 vaccine shot given to UAE residents

DUBAI – A third extra dose of Sinopharm vaccine for Covid-19 has been given to a “small number” of people in the UAE, a health expert has revealed. The extra “booster shot” was given to those who did not develop enough antibodies following the first and second dose of the vaccine. Dr. Walid Zaher, chief research officer of G42 Healthcare, Sinopharm’s distributor in the UAE, told Dubai Eye radio that it is possible to get a third vaccine shot. “It has been shown within the context of a study, to boost immunity to a protected level from Covid-19, and that was the purpose behind giving the third shot to some people,” Dr. Zaher said. He said that residents can check their antibody levels but must wait three months after their second Sinopharm shot if they intend to take another booster shot. “We recommend that if you want to do so, it's within the period of three months of receiving your second shot, and then every three months to ensure that you have a sufficient level of antibodies to prevent, or fight against severe forms of Covid-19,” Dr. Zaher said. Currently, residents are not able to request a third shot, but Dr. Zaher recommended that people consult their doctors who will "notify the healthcare facilities and authorities, and you will be scheduled for a third shot”. “The main purpose here is to ensure the safety of everyone, and that was already achieved. It happens that some people will not respond as well as other people," he said. Dr. Zaher said people whose immune systems did not respond to two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine constitute a “very small number”. ICA/Expat Media
