Third Covid-19 vaccine shot for some UAE residents: expert explains

  DUBAI - A health expert has explained why some individuals have been asked to receive a third shot of the Covid-19 vaccine in the UAE. Sheikha Al Mazrouei, head of Emirates Stem Cells Group, said on Monday (April 5) that health authorities requested a third vaccine dose for individuals with low immune response against Covid-19. The extra “booster shot” was given to those who did not develop enough antibodies following the first and second dose of the vaccine. Al Mazrouei clarified that health authorities have already asked a small number of residents to review their level of antibodies after three weeks of receiving the second dose. "The UAE is proceeding with confident steps to fight the coronavirus, and has taken proactive measures to prevent the spread of the epidemic by following the recommended preventive measures, as well as providing vaccines against the virus,” Al Mazrouei told Arabic media. In March, Dr. Walid Zaher, chief research officer of G42 Healthcare, revealed that it is possible to get a third vaccine shot to boost one’s immune response to Covid-19. He said that residents can check their antibody levels but must wait three months after their second vaccine shot if they intend to take another booster shot. “It has been shown within the context of a study, to boost immunity to a protected level from Covid-19, and that was the purpose behind giving the third shot to some people,” Dr. Zaher said. The UAE has approved the use of Sinopharm and Pfizer-BioNTech in its mass vaccination campaign, while clinical trials for Russia's Sputnik V vaccine is ongoing in the UAE. ICA/Expat Media
