88% of Covid-19 infections in UAE from parties, offices

  DUBAI – Majority of new Covid-19 infections in the UAE resulted from mass gatherings, the spokesperson for the UAE health ministry has revealed. Dr. Farida Al Hosani, spokeswoman for the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention, said 88 percent of Covid-19 cases are caused by mass gatherings, weddings, parties and workplaces. Al Hosani made the statement on Thursday (September 10), as the UAE's number of daily cases continued to climb. On Saturday, the UAE recorded more than 1,000 new cases in 24 hours, its highest since the onslaught of coronavirus in March. Al Hosani reminded the public to continue adhering to the UAE's preventive measures, adding that no one should let their guard down, particularly with the five-fold increase in the number of new Covid-19 cases since August 10. She said that the surge in Covid-19 cases in recent days was mainly because of non-compliance to precautionary measures outlined by the UAE. On Tuesday, authorities revealed that a man had infected 45 people after attending a family gathering in the UAE. One of those he infected, a 90-year-old relative, died from complications. This week, a store in Dubai was also shut down and fined Dh50,000 after it ran a flash sale that drew in a massive crowd of people.
