UAE remains on UK travel ‘red list’

  DUBAI – The UAE will remain on Britain’s travel red list once international travel resumes on May 17, the UK government announced over the weekend. The UAE has been on the UK’s red list since January 29 this year. The UAE has reportedly been red-listed due to its status as a major international travel hub. This means that British and Irish nationals and residents returning to the UK from the UAE will be required to undergo hotel quarantine for 10 days at a cost of 1,750 pounds (Dh9,000). Mansoor Abulhoul, the UAE Ambassador to the UK, expressed hope that “trade and tourism will soon resume, as well as the opportunity for families and friends across our two nations to reunite.” “The UAE is one of the safest countries in the world in relation to Covid-19,” Abdulhoul maintained. Around 1.5 million British nationals visit the UAE every year. Abu Dhabi has placed the UK on its own “green” list of travel countries. Some 43 countries were included in the UK's red list. Only 15 countries were added to the UK’s list for quarantine-free travel from May 17, including Australia, Israel, Iceland, Portugal and Singapore. Grant Shapps, the UK Transport Secretary, said the limited list represented a “cautious” resumption of international travel. Greece, France, Spain and Italy are on an amber list, which means that travelers must quarantine for 10 days and take two PCR tests. Countries on the green list include: Ascension Island, Brunei, Faroe Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, South Georgia, South Sandwich Islands, St Helena, Tristan de Cunha and New Zealand.
