Free repatriation for Indians stranded in UAE, says consulate

DUBAI – Indian expatriates stranded in the UAE on their way to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia may get a free repatriation flight home, according to the Indian Consulate in Dubai. According to the consulate, it can sponsor free airline tickets to those who do not have the means to buy them. Covid-19 travel restrictions in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have left more than 1,000 Indians stranded in the UAE since December. Many of the Indians were transiting through Dubai on their way to Saudi Arabia or Kuwait when the countries announced flight suspensions. Meanwhile, a consulate spokesperson said the mission is coordinating with community groups to encourage stranded passengers to return to India. The spokesperson said that the free airline tickets for those “who cannot afford to buy them” are sponsored under the Indian Community Welfare Fund. The consulate, however, said it has received less than 50 requests for free airline tickets so far, with many Indians wishing to stay until travel restrictions are lifted. Currently, tourist visas in the UAE are extended until March 31 to help stranded tourists.
