New fines may be introduced in UAE to stop Covid-19 spread
DUBAI – The UAE may introduce new penalties and rules to stop the spread of Covid-19, a top official said amid a recent spike in new Covid-19 cases in the country. Salem Al Zaabi, acting chief prosecutor of the Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee at the Public Prosecution, said the introduction of new rules for violations would depend on various factors. Al Zaabi said the new penalties, if introduced, will be aimed at helping the UAE in its battle against the spread of Covid-19. The UAE had imposed strict movement restrictions to quickly bring down the number of coronavirus infections in the country starting in March. It gradually eased those restrictions in July as new Covid-19 cases continued to drop. "We hope to retain those achievements,” he said as the UAE's new coronavirus cases in August returned to daily highs of more than 300. Al Zaabi reminded the public to cooperate if they want the UAE to continue relaxing its Covid-19 rules to allow business and entertainment centres to operate. “We should all comply with the safety rules - if we want the wheel of economy to keep going, our children to go back to schools, if we want to travel again and if we want the leisure centres to stay open," he said.
