Dubai airports are set to revolutionize the passenger experience with the introduction of AI-powered facial recognition technology that will allow travelers to pass through without the need for passports or smart gates. Lieutenant Colonel Khaled bin Madia Al Falasi of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai announced that the new "Travel Without Borders" project will be implemented at all terminals of Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC). The system will use AI facial recognition cameras to scan travelers’ faces as they walk through the airport, confirming their identity and biometric data on the move. There will be no counters, stations, or immigration officers required at passport control, as travelers will no longer need to stop and present any documents. Lt. Col. Al Falasi explained that the initial rollout will target first-class and business travelers before expanding to all passengers. “We have moved beyond the phase of gates and tunnels. Soon, travelers will walk through seamlessly, without needing to stop anywhere,” he said. For first-time travelers to Dubai, there will be a pre-registration process that includes biometric data collection upon their arrival. The project is being implemented in collaboration with airlines and other partners, with its full rollout expected soon. “The concept of borders is being redefined. Our aim is to ensure passengers don’t feel the presence of borders during their journey,” Lt. Col. Al Falasi added. Dubai’s airports already utilize smart gates, but this new system will take seamless travel to the next level, enhancing efficiency and reducing wait times.
