The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) has issued a crucial advisory for visa overstayers in the UAE seeking amnesty. Authorities have emphasized the importance of obtaining an exit pass before booking flight tickets, cautioning that failure to do so could lead to unnecessary complications and delays. Major General Salah Al Qamzi of the GDRFA said that the process of collecting biometric data for visa holders is time-consuming and can take up to 48 hours. "It's best not to book flight tickets until you have received your exit pass," Major General Al Qamzi advised. This warning comes in light of several instances where amnesty seekers arrived at the Al Aweer Centre with pre-booked tickets, only to face delays in securing their exit permits. The amnesty initiative, which began recently, offers a lifeline to visa overstayers by allowing them to regularize their status or leave the country without facing fines or penalties. However, a key requirement of the process is obtaining an exit pass, which is mandatory for anyone looking to depart the UAE under the amnesty program. For residents who have overstayed their visas, the waiting time for an exit pass is significantly shorter, often just a few hours, as their biometric data is already stored in the system. Once issued, the exit pass remains valid for 14 days, giving amnesty seekers ample time to arrange their departure or secure new employment.

Where to apply for exit pass

The GDRFA has clarified that amnesty seekers must apply for their exit passes in the Emirate where their visa was issued. However, exceptions are made for those who have secured employment in Dubai, even if their visa was issued elsewhere. "If you've got a job in Dubai but your visa was issued in another Emirate, you can still sort out your paperwork in Dubai," the GDRFA confirmed via a social media post. The amnesty program has been well-received, with many taking advantage of the opportunity to either leave the country or seek new employment without the burden of accumulated fines. Authorities continue to urge those eligible to make the most of this window, ensuring all documentation is in place to avoid last-minute hitches. This initiative is part of the UAE's broader efforts to support residents and maintain the integrity of its immigration system. The government aims to provide a humane and efficient resolution for individuals who have overstayed their visas, while also ensuring that the country’s regulations are respected. Visa overstayers are encouraged to visit the designated centers to begin the process and are reminded to wait for their exit pass before making any travel arrangements. The GDRFA is working diligently to process applications swiftly, ensuring a smooth transition for all involved. The program is set to run for two months until October 30, providing ample time for visa overstayers to take the necessary steps to regularize their status or prepare for departure.
